Make Up Brushes 101

Just looking at all these brushes is probably already overwhelming you! I receive a lot of questions about what type of make-up brushes I use. Being a make up artist, you can imagine how many I own! I wanted to create a blog post specifically over what I would recommend investing in for your everyday make up bag. I am also going to be going over what each brush is used for, and will include links to where you can buy them!

Brushes are the most important tools when it comes to applying your make up. They make the biggest difference in the way your skin looks & features pop. To me, having the perfect foundation brush will prevent your make up from looking cakey, & give your skin a more natural/flawless look! My favorite brand for brushes is Sigma. I have used these brushes for years now & think they have impeccable quality for their price point! Not only do I use these brushes on myself, but my clients as well. They also offer a 2 year warrantee on their brushes, which makes me feel so much better about the investment. Other brush brands I love are MorpheReal TechniquesBobbi BrownIT Cosmetics, & Eco Tools. All of these brands have great quality brushes with different price points. But for this post, I am going to pick the best of the best brushes (in my opinion) out of all the brands I have for basic everyday brush necessities.

Face Brushes

Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki– This brush is such an amazing foundation brush. So good that I actually own 3 of them… One for myself, one for my clients, & one for a back up! This will make your foundation go on so flawlessly that it could make a poor quality foundation look good. A brush like this a must in your collection.

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge– I think a beauty sponge is also great to have in your make up brush/tools collection! I like to blend out my under eye concealer, or any concealer with this beauty sponge. It can also be used for applying your foundation. All you do is get it wet, squeeze out the excess water, and voila! Its a perfect tool for blending out product without ruining the foundation that is already on your face. The Beauty Blender is also an amazing tool! In my opinion, it’s my a little better than the Real Techniques sponge. But the Real Techniques is much cheaper so I tend to buy it more often.

Sigma F25 Tapered Face Brush- This is my favorite powder brush to use! I personally don’t like overly big powder brushes. This brush is big enough to powder your whole face, but small enough to set certain areas of the face you only want the product to go (ex: the undereye area or T zone).

Bobbi Brown Bronzer Brush- I honestly feel bad even talking about this brush because it is pricey… But I really wanted to be honest with y’all on what I use/recommend! I have tried many bronzer brushes in my day, and this one is #1 in my book. Sometimes it’s worth it to splurge a little on a good quality brush!

Real Techniques Retractable Kabuki Brush- This is a great and less expensive alternative to the Bobbi Brown bronzing brush! It is only $10 and really does a great job bronzing.

Morphe E4 Angled Contour Brush (Blush)- Even though this is considered a contour brush, I love it for applying blush! My favorite makeup artist/Youtuber Jaclyn Hill uses this as a blush brush, & I have been obsessed ever since I tried it. The price is also great!

Eye Brushes

Sigma E40 Tapered Blending Brush- This is the most important eye shadow brush you could ever have! I have about 3 of this brush as well- so it’s definitely a favorite! This brush is what you use to create your “transition shade”, & and is the perfect brush for diffusing and blending any lines in your eye shadow!

Sigma E25 Blending Brush- This brush is what I use to add depth to my crease, which make my eyes pop!

Sigma E45 Small Tapered Blending Brush- This brush is a little smaller and more tapered which is great for concentrating a color in the outer corner of your eye. Great for transitioning a day to night look!

Sigma E55 Eye Shading Brush- This brush is the perfect brush for applying a color all over your lid! Everyone has their go-to gold or champagne shade they love to apply all over the lid and well, this is the perfect brush for that! It’s also great for packing on a vibrant shade or pigment to your lid.

I found a collection on Sigma’s website that has the first 3 eye shadows I mentioned in a package saving you about $10 if you’re interested in purchasing this! I will link it here.

*Side Note* Make sure you are WASHING your brushes!!! Dirty brushes can harbor bacteria, make you break out and ruin the softness of the bristles. It is advised to do this every 2 weeks… but I at least try to make sure I am doing so every month! My all time favorite product for washing my brushes is the Dawn Platinum Erasing dishwashing foam! I have tried so many different brush cleaners, and this is by far the most effective. It will turn my dirty beauty blender completely clean & pink again!

I hope that this post was helpful for you! These are the brushes I would recommend investing for the perfect everyday makeup brush collection. If y’all have any questions about any other types of “specialty” makeup brushes I love (contour, highlighting, ect.), please leave a comment below.

So glad you mentioned Sigma brushes! I’ve been going back and forth about investing in some. Do you recommend a specific set to try for my first purchase? Or is it better to get them individually?
